The creative process is intuitively guided. As I focus on the texture and energy of each natural material, I feel a strong pull to pair certain feathers, antlers, seashells, and leather with one another.
When collecting materials in nature, some pieces speak to me more than others. I gather only what carries good energy—if something doesn’t feel just right, I leave it where it was found. The careful construction, thoughtfulness, and energy infused into each collected element are what give these fans their unique feel.
Each one is created with an open heart and a clear mind, in a space that is healing, grounding, and inspiring—with the intention of passing those qualities on to those who hold them.
The longest part of the entire process is hand-collecting each item with care. Some of the rocks, feathers, and sticks of wood speak to me more than others.
Once collected, each item is washed and dried. To save water, whenever possible the material is washed in a lake, river, or from a rainwater catchment.
The natural material is carefully laid out, each one considered for its unique look and feel. Some pieces seem to call to one another, and are drawn together through a sensory and intuitive process.
Holes are made in the antler and wood handles to carefully support the feathers of each fan. The handles are then paired with feathers that feel best with the texture and color of each handle.
Leather, seashells, and stones are used to embellish each fan, carefully pairing the right size and color together.
The feathers are smudged with gratitude when found and each fan is smudged to purify when completed.
